Marine Stadium Named to World Monuments Fund 2010 Watch List
The Marine Stadium has been named to the World Monuments Fund 2010 Watch List along with other sites such as Macchu Picchu and the Center Cities of Buenos Aires and Old Jerusalem.

Dan Paul
Dan Paul is a highly respected attorney and civic activist who has been involved in Miami civic issues for many years. He has been particularly concerned with the privatization of public space. Mr. Paul was part of a group The Foundation For Modern Architecture (previously named The Rufus Nims Foundation) that prevented the demolition of the Marine Stadium following its closing after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. He provides a very important perspective.

Notification of some upcoming meetings: Virginia Key Master Plan coming back to the Planning Advisory Board on September 18 and the City Commission on October 8. The Urban Environment League is planning a public workshop on the Virginia Key Master Plan on September 26.

Marine Stadium on TV Show Miami Vice
Miami Vice is widely considered to be one of the most visually interesting television shows of all time-and a show that played a significant role in the revival of the popularity of Miami.

Click on the link below to see a whole episode and scroll to the time segment 28:30 to see the Marine Stadium at night, lit up like a large, concrete ghost.

We have received lots of interest from movie and television location scouts about the Stadium. Its strong visual appeal and uniqueness makes it a great icon-and advertisement-for Miami.

Mike Gordon 100 Boat Race
Over the years, the Marine Stadium was a major hub for boat racing. This video features the Mike Gordon 100, which featured 100 laps of racing and was sponsored by (who else) Mike Gordon, owner of Miami's well known Seafood Restaurant.

The video was taken by Don Winer, a former boat racer and Head of Committee for this event. Don is a very active member of Friends of Marine Stadium.

Comcast Newsmakers TV Interview
Girl Scout Hannah Imberman, assisted by her friend Kira Feldman, is compiling a book of personal memories and stories about the Marine Stadium to be called If Seats Could Talk.

In this link, Hannah and Kira are interviewed on the regional TV on Comcast Newsmakers.

Information on "If Seats Could Talk" Project, the book of Marine Stadium memories that is being compiled by girl scout Hannah Imberman. Hannah and her friend Kira Feldman were interviewed by Comcast Newsmakers and will be featured in CNN Headline News in South Florida.

June 23, 2009 Update
Engineering study of the Marine Stadium is funded. Sources include The World Monuments Fund, The National Trust for Historic Preservation, The Villagers, Inc. Miami Dade County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, The John and Selene Devaney Foundation, and Friends of Marine Stadium and Dade Heritage Trust.

The Virginia Key Master Plan was voted down by the Planning Advisory Board on a 8-0 vote. The Plan was withdrawn from the Agenda of the Miami City Commission meeting on June 23, 2009

May 27, 2009 Update
Fundraising opportunity: all new contributions to Friends of Marine Stadium will be matched, dollar per dollar, up to $12,500 by the John and Selene Devaney Foundation. Offer is good up until June 8, 2009.

The City of Miami unveils the Master Plan for Virginia Key. Upcoming meetings of June 9 at the Waterfront Advisory Board, June 17 at the Planning Advisory Board, and June 25 at the City of Miami Commission. We are currently evaluating the plan. We urge all citizens to get involved in the process.

The Friends of Marine Stadium will accept an award from the Urban Environment League at their June 9 "Orchid and Onion" Award Cocktail Reception and annual meeting at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club on June 9 at 6:00 PM. The meeting is free and open to everyone.

Friends of Marine Stadium is applying to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to be designated as a historic site. There are nine sites in the United States. You can assist this process by emaiing memories of rock concerts at the Marine Stadium to ifseatscouldtalk@gmail.com

Continued follow-up from designation of "11 Most Endangered" List. As part of the listing, the Marine Stadium is featured in The New York Times and the NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams. The Miami Herald publishes its third editorial in favor of the Marine Stadium.
