Marine Stadium Named to World Monuments Fund 2010 Watch List
The Marine Stadium has been named to the World Monuments Fund 2010 Watch List along with other sites such as Macchu Picchu and the Center Cities of Buenos Aires and Old Jerusalem.

November 20, 2009 Update
Newly elected Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado is a strong supporter of the Marine Stadium. In his swearing in ceremony, he described the Stadium as a priority of his administration.

The Marine Stadium continues to attract terrific press, including an 8 minute segment on Channel 4, local CBS news. You can view it by cutting to the attached link.

Friends of Marine Stadium is also stepping up its community outreach-we have made numerous presentations to local organizations and we seek more engagements.

November 25, 2008 Update
Brief discussion of appeal by City of the designation of Miami Marine Stadium basin (the Marine Stadium structure was not appealed). Discussion of new press-Pinup Magazine (architecture), Power Boat Magazine, and Preservation Monthly.

First notice of event: "The State of The Stadium", an informational event about the future of Miami Marine Stadium to be held at Miami Rowing Club on January 10.

November 6, 2010 Update
With the passage of the Virginia Key Master Plan in July, we have now begun the challenging task of working with the City of Miami Administration to develop the implementation plan for the restoration and use of the Marine Stadium. This is a challenging and time consuming task. In the meantime, we plan to keep the Stadium in the public eye through press and other activities.

The Marine Stadium has recently received great press, through feature length articles in AIA Architect, Civil Engineering Magazine and BusinessMiami, the publication of the University of Miami School of Business Administration.

Next to this summary is a poster for the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, an annual event sponsored by the Miami Dragon Boat Club. The event will be held adjacent to the Marine Stadium on November 13. Dragon Boat competitions are one of the fastest growing outdoor spectator sports in the world and the Miami Dragon Boat Club, expects to hold large scale events at the Stadium once it is renovated.

November, 2012 Update

We continue to work with the Marine Stadium Steering Committee to develop the site plan for the Marine Stadium. Announcement of exhibit of photographs of the Marine Stadium by Jay Koenigsberg, to be held at the National Hotel to kick off Art Basel. In the newsletter, we feature a terrific Marine Stadium memory by Aaron Underwood, who travelled from Indiannapolis just to visit the Marine Stadium.

November, 2013 Update

The American Express Foundation announces an $80,000 grant for an analysis, design and permit study of the seaside pilings of the Marine Stadium. The Coral Gables Museum exhibit continues to host an extensive series of events including panel discussions on "The Future of Miami Marine Stadium" and Boat Racing. The newsletter includes an extensive section about press and projects inspired by the Stadium including a new typeface designed by a student from New World School of the Arts and an exercise video.

October 13, 2009 Update
Miami Marine Stadium named to 2010 Watch List of the World Monuments Fund (WMF). WMF is the foremost organization dedicated to the protection of architectural and cultural heritage sites world wide.

Penny Lambeth and Violette Sproul will be initiating a major naional press campaign to capitalize on endorsements of World Monuments Fund and Jimmy Buffett.

On October 8, Miami City Commission decided to postpone a decision on the Virginia Key Master Plan until May, 2009. This will provide additional time to work on the plan. While the Master Plan has been much improved, we are very pleased with this result.

October 28, 2009 Update
There are now over 1,000 Miami Marines on our email list!

Discussion of press campaign. A major story put out by the Associated Press has been syndicated by newspapers all over the country. There has also been much local press, including a story on local ABC Channel 10.

Notice of two events; November 4 exhibition and presentation at the University of Miami School of Architecture and November 10 Fundraiser for Dade Heritage Trust. The magazine format "Preservation Today" which focuses on the Marine Stadium, will be unveiled at the fundraiser.

October 5, 2009 Update
The City Commission will hear the redraft of the Virginia Key Master Plan on October 8. Friends of Marine Stadium are urged to attend the meeting-or if they can't make it, contact the Mayor and Commission to support the Stadium. This update notes that the plan is much improved. We do, however, have some concerns-they are described in this update.

October 9, 2011 Update

After a summer pause, Friends of Miami Marine Stadium continues to negotiatie wiith the City of Miami Administration to develop a workable plan to restore the Marine Stadium. We are pleased with the cooperaton we are now receiving.

 

The movement to restore the Stadium continues to get great press, including an article in Fast Company Magazine.

 

The initial members of the Board of Directors of Friends of Miami Marine Stadium have been selected. The Board-which will be expanded-is tasked with guiding the restoration and operation and procuring funding for the Marine Stadium.

October 9, 2012 Update

Friends of Miami Marine Stadium made a presentation to the Marine Stadium Steering Committee in September which delineated the proposed site plan for the Marine Stadium. We will go back to the Miami City Commission and Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority of the site plan in the fall for approval. We also completed our Economic Impact Analysis by the Washington Economics Group and we are progressing on our capital planning study.

October 9, 2013 Update

This is newsletter #67! Introduction to the exhibit at the Coral Gables Museum, which opens October 17. A story about the successful "Never Quit Challenge" a race to benefit charities benefitting veterans and their families which held its first stop at the Miami Marine Stadium. the Warriors were greated by Gloria Estefan and Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado.

 

Finally, a great story by Phil Kunz, who attended the first boat race at the Marine Stadium. A flag that Phil retrieved on one of his visits to the Stadium is  part of the memoribilia in the exhibit.
