Marine Stadium Named to World Monuments Fund 2010 Watch List
The Marine Stadium has been named to the World Monuments Fund 2010 Watch List along with other sites such as Macchu Picchu and the Center Cities of Buenos Aires and Old Jerusalem.

Joseph King, Executive Director, AMIKIDS

AMIKIDS Miami Dade is a not for profit organization dedicated to providing our community's troubled youth with a promising future. The program, which oriented to 14-19 years olds, has an extremely high 80% success rate. AMIKIDS has a branch located on Virginia Key near to the Stadium. Friends of Miami Marine Stadium looks forward to working with AMIKIDS on area cleanups, restoration projects, and unofficial sea grass surveys. Attached is a letter of support from Joseph King, the Executive Director of Miami-Dade AMIKIDS. It is these types of connections that we seek to foster to make the Marine Stadium a real community purpose building.

October 9, 2011 Update

After a summer pause, Friends of Miami Marine Stadium continues to negotiatie wiith the City of Miami Administration to develop a workable plan to restore the Marine Stadium. We are pleased with the cooperaton we are now receiving.

 

The movement to restore the Stadium continues to get great press, including an article in Fast Company Magazine.

 

The initial members of the Board of Directors of Friends of Miami Marine Stadium have been selected. The Board-which will be expanded-is tasked with guiding the restoration and operation and procuring funding for the Marine Stadium.

For the last three years, we have been working with Miami Tri Events, a major triathlon promoter wthich has pioneered triathlons at the Marine Stadium. September 1, 2011 Update

In late spring and summer, Friends of Miami Marine Staidum began to negotiate with teh City to assume the rights te renovate the Marine Stadium. Our initial negotiations were unsuccessful and we have taken a "summer pause" to recraft our proposal. We expect to have a new proposal soon.

 

We have received our 501c3 designation and we are in the process of selecting our first set of directors. The Marine Stadium continued to be in the news this summer with numerous articles and in the press, including the sixth editorial in support of the Marine Stadium by The Miami Herald.

Miami Herald, Presersvation Put on Hold

This article, written on July 25, states that our preservation plans have been put on hold due to a dispute witth the City Administraiton over terms. We are now taking a brief "Time-out" and we expect to be back to the City with a new proposal in early fall.

Restoratikon of the Marine Stadium is a large and complex task, and after 3 1/2 years of work, we fully intend to keep working until we are successful.

July 1, 2011 Update

This update includes description of the Floating Stage Awawrds Ceremony at the Rusty Pelican and more articles and press. Friends of Marine Stadium announces that it has incorporated and applied for 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. We will also be forming an independent Board of Directors.

 

We continue to seek memories of the Marine Stadium for our book, IF SEATS COULD TALK. This update featured a link to a memory by Stuart Blumbreg, who gave a first person account of "The Hug"-when Sammy Davis Jr. embraced Richard Nixon at a campaign rally at the Marine Stadium in 1972.

Floating Stage Awards Ceremony

This brief video shows the Floating Stage Design Contest Awards Ceremony, which was held on May 2, 2011. 175 people attended the event and all 90 entries were displayed. The evening featured presentations by Hilario Candela, architect of the Marine Stadium, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, keynote spaeker Frank E. Sanchis III, DIrector of U.S. Programs for the World Monuments Fund, and Joachim Perez, Executive Director of DawnTown, the group that administered the contest. It was a terrific evening!
